The Tabulator

It is not proposed to describe this machine in any detail. It was, apart from an on/off switch and a half horsepower motor, a purely mechanical device, and a very complicated one indeed for which specialist training was required, and the author managed to avoid that.

The machine could accumulate totals from succesive sensed cards and print the called number and the charge on pre-printed continuous stationery. When the Automatic Totalising Attachment (ATA) sensed a change in subscriber telephone number, the card feed paused whilst the total was printed and then continued to print the next telephone account.
